A new research has revealed that going to bed earlier manages to cut the risk of teen depression substantially. Also, the practice seems to protect against youngsters having suicidal thoughts.
An American study, which involved subjects from 12 to 18 years, discovered that those who had bedtimes of after midnight or further were about 24% more likely to have depression as compared to those who hit the sack before 11PM.
Also, those who got 5 hours or fewer of sleep a night, are 71% more prone to depression than youngsters who help for 8 hours or more. It has been estimated that across UK, about 80,000 children and adolescents have depression.
For the sake of study, researchers from Columbia University Medical Center in New York analyzed data collected from 15,500 teenagers over the 1990s, and every 1 in 15 subjects was found to have depression.
"Adequate quality sleep could therefore be a preventative measure against depression and a treatment for depression", said Study leader Dr James Gangwisch.
The details of the study have been published in the journal Sleep.
