Music May Cause Depression in Teens, Study Says

Posted in : Symptoms

(added last year!)

A new study from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine says that teens who spend a lot of time listening to music are more likely to suffer from depression, reports Fox News. The study monitored 106 teens over a two-month period, logging what kinds of media they were using. Their research found that those who spend most of their time listening to music were 8.3 times more likely to be depressed.

However, those who spend most of their time reading books were one-tenth as likely to be depressed. But before you put down your headphones for good, here's what Dr. Brian Primack, the head of the study, said.

"At this point, it is not clear whether depressed people begin to listen to more music to escape, or whether listening to large amounts of music can lead to depression, or both," he explained, but the findings may help people to "recognize the links between media and depression." Do you listen to a lot of music? Do you think there's any truth to this study? Let us know what you think in the comments.
